Race car driver Brit Andersen of Branford was confident he’d reach victory lane sometime this year, his first season in a regional midget car series. On September 18, his confidence paid off.

Andersen won the first race of his midget career at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, NC in the Real Race Cars Inversion Challenge Twin 25-lap features for the USAC Carolina-Virginia Ford Focus Midget car series.

In the first 25-lap feature, Aron Oakley of Greenburg, Ind., led the first 17 laps before Andersen passed him going into turn three. Andersen continued to pull away and led the final eight laps to claim the win.

“This is awesome,” said Andersen, 16, a junior at Branford High, who races on weekends. “My dad and I along with the Real Race Car crew have been working real hard all year. We knew we were getting close (to a win), but this is just awesome to win my first race in a midget.”

Robbie Ray moved up to third by lap 10 and passed Oakley on lap 22 to take second place. Oakley finished third.

The win gave Andersen nine top 10 finishes overall at the time.
